President's Message

The Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences aims to promote the advance of science, art and practice of the engineering for the public and is empowered to undertake activities including supporting education and research programmes, conferences and seminars, and provide expert advice on engineering matters to government and other bodies.

The academy was formed in 1994 by eight far sighted distinguished engineers under the leadership of Sir S Y Chung, Sir Charles Kao, and Ir Professor Y K Cheung. The present Fellowship include successful university professors, captains of industrialists and leaders of engineering companies. I am greatly honoured to be elected as the 12th President of the Academy on 14 December 2020.

If we say 2020 was a difficult year with social movements and the pandemic, with the Government investing heavily on infrastructure and innovation and technology, the renewed opportunities at the Great Bay Area, and China’s fourteenth Five Year Plan, one must consider 2021 as a year of hope.

With this frame of mind, the Academy is very ready to face the challenges and opportunities in excellence in research and development; and translate these achievements to business for creation of wealth, promotion of engineering in the community and to assist the administration on its initiatives such as soft and hard infrastructures, smart city and sustainable development.

I would invite our Fellows to join hand with me and the Executive to achieve these meaningful goals; and to elevate the image of the Academy in the community.
